Mother's Day

Dizem que não há amor no mundo maior que o amor de mãe. Bom, somente elas podem nos dizer se isso é verdade. O que podemos fazer apenas é retribuir todo o carinho que nossas mães nos dão ou nos deram desde o momento em que nascemos. E para entrar nesse clima, no dia 14 de maio celebramos o Dia das Mães. Vamos percorrer as origens dessa data tão significativa.

A celebração atual teve início nos Estados Unidos a partir de 1914, entretanto, desde a Grécia Antiga já há registros de comemorações semelhantes em homenagem às mamães, através de adorações a divindades que simbolizavam a figura materna. Algumas entre tantas eram as deusas Reia e Cibele.

E com o transcorrer do tempo, a celebração sofreu alterações e foi readaptada ao contexto atual, sendo celebrada em quase todas as partes do mundo.

Um exemplo disso foi quando no século XVII, na Inglaterra, operários passaram a ter o direito a um dia de folga para visitar suas mães, data conhecida como Mothering Day.
Já no início do século XX, nos Estados Unidos, a celebração tomou maiores proporções através dos esforços de Anna Jarvis, uma jovem que havia perdido sua mãe, Ann Maria, em 1905. Ann Maria valorizava profundamente a maternidade e em 1858 fundou o Mothers Day Work Club. A filha, seguindo os passos da mãe, deu continuidade ao projeto e ajudou a consolidar a data.

It is said there is no love in the world greater than a mother’s love. Well, only they can tell us whether or not that is true. The only thing we can do is reciprocate all the loving that our mothers have been giving or gave us from the moment we were born. And to get into this atmosphere, on May 14th we celebrate Mother’s Day. Let’s go through the origins of this significant date.

The celebration as we know began in the United States in 1914. However, since the Ancient Greece there has been record of similar celebrations in homage to the mums, through the worship of goddesses that symbolized the maternal figure. Some among many were the Goddesses Reia and Cybele.

And as time went by, the celebration went through changes and was readapted to our current scenario, being celebrated in almost every part of the world.

An example of that is when in the 17th Century, in England, workers started to have the right to a day-off so they could visit their mothers, known as Mothering Day.

At the beginning of the 20th Century, in the USA, the celebration took greater proportions through the efforts of Anna Jarvis, a young girl who had lost her mother, Ann Maria, in 1905. Ann Maria valued motherhood very deeply and in 1858 founded the Mothers Day Work Club. Her daughter, following her steps, carried the project ahead and helped to establish the date.
